What is a NAS and how to get started?

NAS! – It simply stands for Network Attached Storage.

But what does that even mean? In basic terms it is a computer or server that has a storage device like a hard drive or maybe many, that you can connect to from another location to store your digital information. Your storage is linked to a network.

So why would you even want that or even need that? Well, think of it like this. A NAS is a great way to keep all of you digital items together, things like you personal documents, photos, videos, media files, backups and it even acts as your own personal cloud storage. Perfect for your own small business too! No paying for things like Google Drive, One Drive, Dropbox extra storage. Plus what if you loose your cloud account? You have potentially lost a huge and important part of your life and to me that is something I am not willing to risk.

But wait there’s more!
Not only can you access you own files from anywhere in your home but you can also access them from anywhere in the outside world as well, assuming you have access to the internet. You can even secure your documents and delegate who has access to them. Separate other family members, friends or the public from accessing your most delicate and treasured documents or just as easily share what you want with the world. You can even host lots of different software environments to make things like your own personal home firewall to keep an eye on your homes internet traffic (What are your kids looking at?). You can create media centers for movies with apps like Plex or Jellyfin. Nextcloud to access or share documents… Its almost endless what you decide you want to do.

Empowering individuals through shared knowledge and hands-on experience is my mission.
What am I doing with it?

I have my own ideas and it aligns with what so many other people are using their NAS for.

I will admit that when I start building a DIY NAS my scope changed when I realised my own potential.

Like many other people we all come across new ideas and discover other technologies around us. Well if that’s you with NAS then prepare to be surrounded by information with step by step instructions and take a journey on how to build your own personal NAS, or as it is commonly called, a DIY NAS.

So without rambling on too much make yourself familiar with the website. Its here for you and me to plan, make and implement a DIY NAS build. Naturally this will evolve over time as we progress through all the challenges and triumphs. And if you have questions or require more information then please feel free to contact me and get involved.
